Banana Shortcake

This banana shortcake recipe layers fluffy biscuits, caramelized bananas, and a cloud of whipped cream. Quick, simple, nostalgic, and they taste incredible!

Banana Shortcake

These shortcakes are like a cross between bananas foster and strawberry shortcake, in the very best way. They come together fast with just a handful of ingredients.

You can start with store-bought biscuits or make your own. Either way, the brown sugar banana caramel sauce steals the show. In fact, I recommend saving it for topping banana pancakes!

Key Ingredients

  • Biscuits: Use homemade biscuit dough or store-bought. For homemade, try our fluffy biscuits or buttermilk biscuits. Either works beautifully here.
  • Banana Caramel: We call this our “fake-out” caramel sauce. It’s not a true caramel, but it tastes remarkably close and takes a fraction of the time. You’ll melt butter with brown sugar and a pinch of salt, then stir in sliced bananas until tender and glossy.
  • Whipped Cream: We love our homemade whipped cream, but store-bought works perfectly if you’re short on time.

How to Make Banana Shortcake

Tip 1: Make the sauce while the biscuits bake. You can make this easy banana dessert in about 15 minutes. The sauce comes together quickly while the biscuits bake in the oven.

Melt the butter and brown sugar in a skillet over medium heat until the sugar dissolves into the butter. Add a splash of water to thin the sauce and help it come together, then stir in a pinch of salt. Finally, add the sliced bananas and cook until tender. Simple, fast, and downright delicious.

Tip 2: Assembling the shortcakes. When your biscuits are still warm from the oven, break them open, then layer on lots of bananas, the caramel sauce, and finish with whipped cream.

These banana shortcakes are inspired by bananas foster. Use your favorite store-bought biscuit dough, or our homemade biscuits recipe. Then, make the banana caramel sauce and top with whipped cream. So good!

4 Servings

You Will Need

4 biscuits, from frozen, refrigerated, or homemade biscuits

8 tablespoons unsalted butter (113 g)

½ cup packed brown sugar (100 g)

¼ teaspoon fine sea salt

4 bananas, peeled and sliced

4 tablespoons water

Homemade whipped cream, for serving

Directions

1Bake biscuits: Preheat the oven and bake the biscuits as directed on the package or in your recipe.

2Make banana caramel: Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large skillet with a lid over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and whisk until it melts into the butter. Add the salt and water, then whisk until smooth. Cover and set aside (off the heat) until the biscuits are done.

3Build shortcakes: When the biscuits are ready, add the banana slices to the sauce and cook until tender, about 2 minutes. Split the warm biscuits and place them on individual plates. Spoon bananas and sauce over the bottoms, top with a generous dollop of whipped cream, then finish with the biscuit tops and a drizzle of extra sauce.
