Perfect Pumpkin Pie Spice

This homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe is my go-to for pies, cookies, cakes, and all things fall.

Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice

You can buy pumpkin pie spice, but since you probably already have everything you need to make it, there’s no need! My essential blend is perfect for pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pancakes, and more!

I use this blend whenever a recipe calls for pumpkin pie spice or as a substitute for cinnamon. It’s perfect for muffins, cakes, cookies, and many of your favorite fall recipes and holiday recipes!

Key Ingredients

  • Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon is the backbone of this blend. If available, I love using Vietnamese (Saigon) cinnamon for its rich, warm, and spicy flavor. Since you’ll have some leftover, it is perfect in baked goods like cinnamon rolls, apple pie, and oatmeal cookies.
  • Ginger: Dried ground ginger adds warmth and a subtle spicy kick that balances the sweetness of other spices.
  • Cloves: Ground cloves are potent, so a little goes a long way. They’re a classic in pumpkin pie, gingerbread, and many fall treats.
  • Nutmeg (Optional): Adds a warm, slightly sweet, nutty flavor that complements the other spices beautifully. I especially love fresh ground nutmeg.
  • Allspice (Optional): Allspice offers a unique blend of flavors reminiscent of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, making it a natural addition to this mix.
  • Black Pepper or Cayenne Pepper (Optional): If you enjoy a tiny bit of heat, consider adding a small amount of black pepper or cayenne pepper. Remember, a little goes a long way, so start with a pinch and adjust to your taste.

Tips for Making Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice

Tip 1: Make the basic blend. The simplest version of pumpkin pie spice is made with cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. This classic blend works beautifully in all your favorite pumpkin recipes. For more flavor and spice, add one or more of the optional spices like nutmeg, allspice, or even a pinch of pepper.

Tip 2: Storing and shelf-life. After mixing, transfer your spice blend to a small mason jar or spice jar. Store it in a cool, dark, and dry place, and it will stay fresh and fragrant for up to 2 years.
